During the cooling cycle, the timer allows the compressor and fans to run, cooling the appliance’s interior. Moisture in the air condenses and freezes on the cold evaporator coils.

After approximately 8 hours of compressor operation, the timer temporarily switches off the cooling system and activates a defrost heater or a hot gas system.

The defrost cycle melts the accumulated ice into water, which then drains into a collection pan to evaporate.

The cycle typically lasts about 30 minutes or is terminated earlier by a defrost thermostat once the coil is warm enough.

After the defrost is complete, the timer switches power back to the compressor and fans, resuming normal cooling operation.
