A capacitor is an electronic component used to store energy. Capacitors consist of 2 metal plates that are separated by a dielectric (non-conductive electrical insulator). Some of the most common dielectrics used are Electrolytic, Ceramic, & Film.

Application: Commonly used in single-phase AC motors for fans, pumps, and appliances like air conditioners and washing machines.

Capacitance rating: The capacitance, measured in microfarads (µF), must be correct for the motor to function properly. A 12 µF rating is used to help maintain the motor’s running performance.

Consider tolerance: If you can’t find an exact match, a replacement with a µF rating that is within a 10-20% tolerance of the original will generally work, but using an exact match is always best.
